Effect of Prolonged Alcohol Ingestion on The Growth Rate of Pat.

Abstract
Young white rats and relatively mature rats were fed on 15% ethyl alcohol and normal diet for 120 days. The results were as follows:
1. When rats were fed with 15% ethyl alcohol and normal diet ad libidum for 120 days, the growth rate was retarded.
2. The ingestion of alcohol inhibited the growth rate during the early stage, but not during the later stage of experiment.
3. The inhibiting effect of alcohol on the growth rate was greater in young animals than in the Young white rats and relatively mature rats were fed on 15% ethyl alcohol and normal diet for 120 days. The results were as follows:
1. When rats were fed with 15% ethyl alcohol and normal diet ad libidum for 120 days, the growth rate was retarded.
2. The ingestion of alcohol inhibited the growth rate during the early stage, but not during the later stage of experiment.
3. The inhibiting effect of alcohol on the growth rate was greater in young animals than in the mature animals.
4. The ingestion of alcohol to rats caused no significant changes in histological appearace of the liver or spleen, neither did it appear to affect the electrophoretic pattern of the blood serum.
5. It is possible that there is no relationship between the inhibiting effect on the growth rate and the metabolic function of the liver of ingesting alcohol to rats over a long period.
